The intensity of the subject is certainly felt in this swirl of watercolour and pastel. Sea pictures were not encouraged at this period (particularly uncomfortable things like wrecks) and Richard’s hero Turner was out of fashion. Richard was at Bradford School of Art when he painted this but it was probably worked on at home for his own pleasure and not submitted for his tutors to frown at!
