Still Life for Richard could either mean a set piece or it could be a quite incidental detail in a larger picture.
Sometimes a still life can be part of a greater picture and here the bowl of fruit is just the foreground to journey into a cottage and out through its back door to a flat and spacious landscape.
The diseased apple took Richard’s eye and placed on top of the black and white print of the local paper made an interesting subject. “Dreamland” was the name of the local electric blanket factory in Hythe.
Richard was a pipe smoker and his studio was often slightly clouded with smoke. The smell of Saint Bruno Flake wafted round the house. The objects have been carefully placed and the composition feels perfect.
