Charles Shearer's 1986 drawing gave us the idea to build a page about all Richard's studios.
In the mid 1980s artist Charles Shearer was commissioned by art critic and curator William Feaver to make drawings of twelve artists' studios for Peter Moore's 'Project 8: Out of Line' at Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, in 1986. Richard was one of his selected artists. He spent a day with Richard and Mavis and managed to produce the atmospheric drawing below in the fading light of the late afternoon. The collectors who now own Charles's work approached us to see if we could feature the drawing somewhere in our catalogue and website. Charles enthusiastically supported the idea too.
We were delighted with the offer. As we thought how best show it off, we realised that we had quite a lot of material about the studio that Charles visited, and about many of the studios that preceeded it. So we have created a 'Richard's Studios' page that outlines a brief history of the rooms where he made his paintings and drawings, and which collects together other people's memories, photos and paintings of them.
