The Christian Vision

Redfern Gallery, London

1 work in a group show of twenty. ------------------- Excerpt from the Foreword The artist, perhaps whether he knows it or not, has a similar function to that of the Church; to him is granted a vision which it is his business to communicate. In the breakup of the European idea which has now reached its widest effect the two decisive factors have been, first loss of the Church as the guardian of truth, second the loss of respect for man’s true nature ‐ the humanities. In the consequent confusion the artist is heavily involved. The prophetic gift has not failed but the prophet has lost the key both to its meaning and its expression. Formula or formlessness have proved equally fatal to vitality. Patrick Bushell of the Oratory ------------------------ Includes works by Geoffrey Clarke, Eric Gill, Avray Wilson, Leon Underwood, Elizabeth Frink, David Jones, Graham Sutherland, Bryan Wynter, Mark Gertler, Spencer, William Scott, Burra, Eurich, Richards, de Maistre John Piper etc.
