Tate, London
The inaugural exhibition of the Massey Collection of English Painting (MCEP), comprising 75 works by British artists.
Vincent Massey and his wife Alice initially built their collection while he was Canada's High Commissioner in London from 1935 to 1946. Vincent gifted the collection to the National Gallery of Canada when he was still in London. The Tate Gallery offered him an exhibition before he took it to Canada for its first showing there in the autumn of 1946. He then put it on tour all over Canada until 1949. After that it travelled to Australia, New Zealand and the USA until 1952.
More details about the artists in the show and its many venues can be found in GOING BRITISH AND BEING MODERN IN THE VISUAL ART SYSTEMS OF CANADA, 1906-1976, a PhD thesis by Sarah A. Stanners, University of Toronto, 2009.
