When we were adding the installation photos of the Bradford 1979-80 retrospective to the catalogue, we saw, small in the frame, a painting hanging on one of the screens which we eventually identified as 'Thunderstorm' aka 'Thunderstorm over London'. We noticed, however, that the proportions of the picture on display were very different from the shape of the the black and white photo we already had of it. See image below (very fuzzy from the enlargement) and compare it to the image above.
After scratching our heads for some time, we have concluded that Richard has probably sawn off a bit of the original painting, and possibly tweaked some of the details too. We won't be able to confirm that until we can track down the whereabouts of the work or see a good quality photo of the cropped version.
There is at least one other instance of Richard drastically amputating part of a painting. See The Tram to Howarth (1968).
