Last night began my picture of the Deluge for the Sketch Club on a 30x24 canvas.

J. Wheatley criticized Deluge and others. He said mine was very good and showed very considerable knowledge of design.

Last night began my picture of the Deluge for the Sketch Club on a 30x24 canvas.

These are the first and last of a long series of diary entries Richard made about his struggle to get the painting finished in order to enter it in the Slade's Sketch Club competition.  Go to the 1925 Slade period in the Timeline to find some of them.

Apart from his references to the picture containing figures, there is little else to tell us exactly what the painting depicted, but we can guess from his mention of "The Flood" as being one of the subjects set by the Sketch Club, and his reference to Turner's "Deluge", that it is probably about the biblical flood.

Sadly we have not come across any sort of image of it.
