PICTURES FOR SCHOOLS: S.E.A. EXHIBITION

Tate Gallery, London

The Society for Education through Art (SEA) held exhibitions from 1947 to 1969 as part of their Pictures for Schools program, chaired by Nan Youngman to encourage local education authorities and other education institutions to purchase original works of art. Richard submitted paintings to several of these exhibitions, and sold a good many of them.

"Children, notoriously starved in respect of the visual arts and often even of the visual decencies in their own homes, should be given a chance to enjoy them at school: this exhibition (organised by the Society for Education in Art) offered a means of putting this principle into practice by selecting and exhibiting the kind of pictures and sculpture suitable for children and by encouraging education authorities to buy them."
