It was acquired by Esso in 1925 and extended by Exxon-Mobil in 1951. It is the largest refinery in Great Britain. By contrast the village of Fawley has rural traditions dating back to the Domesday Book. Nearby is the popular shingle beach of Calshot where Eurich painted many of his coastal views.
