This beautiful and melancholy little study was painted when Richard’s son Crispin was dying of cancer. He was being nursed by Mavis and Richard at their home not far from Lepe Beach where the stones would have been picked up on their frequent walks there. Richard’s need to paint was paramount but with his usual imagination running low, the concentration needed for this picture would have helped to distract him.
