England Robin Hood's Bay The North Yorkshire breakers buidlings choppy sea coble gig harbour harbour entrance houses quays red cliffs rowing boat sailing boat sailing ship sailing yacht tall ship three master town walls trailer villages washing line wavesRichard mentions this painting in his 1936 diary:
2nd Nov: Began painting The Pilot Boat (16x20) for show at French GalleryIn his sales diary Richard records it was sold from the Goupil Gallery in early 1937. This apparent contradiction is explained by the fact that the Goupil Gallery moved into rooms in the The French Gallery in 1933.
The sketch below includes a stern view of a coble fishing boat which almost matches the boat in 'Pilot Boat'. The sketch however is dated 1940, over six years after the painting was done. Another thing to scratch our heads about.
Freelance curator and researcher Caroline Krzesinska has spotted that the painting is set in Robin Hood's Bay harbour in Yorkshire.
