The letter below was sent a few months before Richard died.  We presume the painting was borrowed from this collector for the 1994, Edge of All the Land, retrospective exhibition in Southampton City Art Gallery, curated by Nicholas Usherwood.

. . . in 1945 I bought your delightful 'Boy with Cat' from the Redfern, and what enourmous pleasure my husband and I have had from it. I am now a widow and I regard the picture with constant admiration, ( even though neither of us liked cats!).
