This is the painted sketch for RE's painting, Dunkirk Beach, May 1940. The final painting was bought from the 1941 Redfern Gallery exhibition by Vincent Massey, the first Canadian born Governor General of Canada. Massey bequeathed his painting to the National Gallery of Canada in 1946.
This sketch was bought by an unknown private collector from the 1943 Redfern Gallery exhibition. You can compare the sketch and the final painting below. There are five Richard Eurich works that we know of depicting the Dunkirk evacuation. See them all together by going to Dunkirk Beach, 1940.
