This watercolour was found in a scrapbook RE compiled to show a selection of studies ". . . drawn before I went to the Slade School, London in 1924 - so they represent a cross section of what I was studying out of school up to the age of twenty one.".
Not many 19-year olds are up early on Boxing Day and out on the moors with their paintbox! He probably had been given some new paints and was longing to try them out. And what a difficult subject! It’s a study in the nuances of light and colour across sky and earth with hardly anything solid and tangible. He had only recently heard of Turner and Ilkley is not far from Farnley Hall where Turner had painted quite extensively.
