Art and the Sea

Southampton City Art Gallery

"Art and the Sea" was an independent initiative which organised nine exhibitions curated locally in six UK cities between January and December 1981, culminating with an exibition in January/February 1982 at the ICA in London. The ICA show consisted of selected works drawn from all the regional exhibitions.

Richard's Sea Traffic (1980) was included in the Southampton City Art Gallery exhibition (3 Sept - 22 Oct 1981, selected by Elizabeth Ogborn), and shown again later at the ICA in London (6 Jan - 7 Feb 1982). 

Southampton had a parallel exhibition with additional works selected by Barry Barker at the John Hansard Gallery on the University of Southampton campus.

The project was organised by Mike Collier assisted by Sue Mackinnon, John Mackinnon, Liz Beech and Michael Sheedy. 

It was funded by The Arts Council of Great Britain, Marka and Spencer Ltd, The English Tourist Board, The Greater London Arts Association, Sotheby Parke Bernet & Co and P&O Cruises.d Feb. 7th 1982.
