This image is from a photograph found in an album kept by Richard to record his work. The original drawing emerged from obscurity in the 2019 auction listed below which confirmed our suspicion that it was 'A Fairy Tale' from Richard's first solo show. "A Fairy Tale" was bought from the Goupil Gallery show by Sir Michael Sadler along with The Three Ages, Clowns by the Sea, Lady with a Lute and The Family. Richard received £35 for the lot, according to his sales diary.
It seems Sadler also bought The Pool in the Wood, as he gifted it to The Cooper Gallery in 1933.
