England Hampshire The New Forest The South fences hills hillside houses rainbows treesThere are a few artists to whom I was attracted when I saw their later work and your father was one. It was his increasing focus on animating simple surfaces without distraction - sky, sea and.....New Forest woodland!
The First Noads was the wood that Dad saw every day on his regular walk on the Forest. The white fence posts carry a wire fence across the bog and the woods rise up above it. Dad has made them higher than they actually are, and there is no house there. But you can see why he has done those things. The white trunks of the silver birches echo the fence posts to make the surface of the picture dance. And he loved a good rainbow!”
