Quarry Remembered

1964

This is an amazingly experimental work for Richard both in terms of structure and colour. He was teaching at Camberwell School of Art and he said in a recorded interview with the Imperial War Museum in the '70s that he learned a lot there. He was freed from commission work and could follow his own ideas, but it seems that witnessing the students’ concerns around painting awoke new interests within himself. Much of his work during the ’60s is lit up almost literally with the excitement of exploring what was for him unfamiliar territory.
