Recto: Signed and dated lower right: R Eurich 1954 and signed again

Verso: Inscribed 'SOLENT FORT' (on the stretcher); Redfern sales label dated 5th May, 1955 but torn in the middle so the purchaser details are missing.

Four Palmerston seaforts were built across the Solent from Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight around 1860. They were designed, along with other land based forts, to protect the Royal Navy port of Portsmouth from a perceived threat from the French navy.  This one is Spitbank Fort, now a luxury hotel.

The seaforts were the main subject in a number of Richard's paintings, and an incidental subject in a few others. See the links below to the other works.
