Richard found that working on canvas instead of board gave textured life to the quality of paint in the experimental pictures of this decade. The earth here is already accepting the night while the sky bursts forth in a few moments of ecstatic glory. When I briefly saw this picture at a show in London I was particularly struck by the smeared pure green in the sky. But if I imagine the painting without this vivd colour it falls apart. It needed this link to the world below it. A small picture, but its perfection is the fruit of years …
