Richard did at least two drawings with horses in 1928, this one and one which we have titled Horse and Rider. See below.
Could either of these drawings originally have been titled The Magic Horse, which was shown in Richard's first solo show at the Goupil Gallery in 1929 as cat 7?
In his autobiography Richard describes a procession in Bradford during his early childhood. He was in awe of the great horses with their measured pace:
There were brewers’ drays with horses which were probably the finest in the world. With their chains of brasses, plumes on their heads and beautifully plaited manes and tails, they moved in that majestic rhythm which puts them in a world apart.
