Bait Diggers and Sunbathers

1981-85

This is quite a funny picture as well as a beautiful one. The windbreak appears in earlier works. The question is whether it was added later to the painting to liven up the placidity of the composition. Dad dates this picture as extended over some years and this is an obvious conclusion one might jump to.

A visitor was browsing through sketches on this site and found the reference sketch for this work. See below. It includes the windbreak, showing it was not an afterthought at all. Well spotted, thank you!

When we added the sketch to this record we discovered it was already associated with another painting - The Black Dog - also done in 1985! In this picture the windbreak has been left out but the figures and setting are almost the same.
