Richard painted several festive occasions accompanied by fireworks including the Tall Ships race at Southampton, and the return of Sir Francis Chichester to Beaulieu after his race round the globe in Gipsy Moth. It’s unclear what this celebration is about but it looks to me as if it is the last night of Cowes Week on the Solent. There is a sort of ‘cliff’ at Lepe beach with barbecue area overlooking the water ideal for watching all the fun.
