Blue Sea

1981

This is an extraordinary painting. One of his “empty” pictures, I feel the rhythm of the paint across the surface is perfectly calibrated, a really difficult thing to achieve. Dad had a correspondence with Edward Wadsworth over many years. Wadsworth maintained that the sea should not take up more than one seventh of the picture surface and of course Dad disagreed! The quality of the paint reminds me of Bonnard, a painter Dad much admired.
