Seascape, Misty Morning

1982

The imagined bird’s-eye view gives this picture a hallucinatory sensation as the two boats are suspended high up in an indeterminate area that could be sea or sky. The spit of land that reveals itself as the tide recedes is like a road disappearing into the mist. The tiny figures are needed to give a sense of scale. Some wonderfully subtle gradations in this painting of nothingness.
