England Hampshire Lepe Beach Solent The South bait diggers sail boat ships tankers

A beautifully atmospheric painting. This is an unusual composition with the light orange beach rearing up till it intersects with sky at one point without the sea intersecting between. I think Dad enjoyed exploring the effect of at least half the picture being almost empty. You can see this picture as if the viewer is the one who has ventured ‘round the corner’ or as if the vessels on the sea are on their way to disappear round the corner in the other direction.

Richard included bait diggers as a main subject or tiny in the foreground or background in dozens of works.
