beach container ship hole pebbles sailing boat shapes stones strange windy worn downThis still life set out on a beach is one of at least ten similar works done between 1934 and 1990.
This title is probably one of my mother’s ideas. I can now see the sleeping figure lying in the left pebble while the right pebble looks like a sort of sheep with its head on the right and its (lack of) tail up in the air. My own pictures of interesting stones were dismal failures. I can see now how placing them in a land- or seascape gives them a real sense of presence. So much better to look through and round them as well as at them.
