This measures just a bit more than a double square, a difficult proportion to handle. While the upper half of the picture is serene, it feels as if the lower half may have presented a few more problems than just that of tricky cross currents. This spit which sticks out at low water usually only extends this far when the tide is completely out, and then this side of it is usually an exposed seaweedy dark beach. The left part of the promontory is out of the water for longer and therefore does not get covered with seaweed, so the greenness is the result of Dad’s battle with tones and colours. Was the breakwater itself an afterthought? He has solved some problems there, and the jewel-like figures definitely save the day.
