In Debt to Caroline

I did the drawing below at the age of four, and some years later, Dad did a painting based on it. It was shortly after the death of my baby sister Joanna. My drawings had been full of prams and houses and gardens full of flowers, very happy scenes, and then I did this. Life seemed darker, and Dad must have responded to my feelings, and to this psychological image. Mine was in black and white, but Dad chose to do a painting, the house divided between the happy and the sad. His sad house has no windows, but the …
