This painting is undated but was listed as "c1980" when auctioned in 1991. However, the dimensions quoted in Richard's diary entry match those of this painting, making it the most likely candidate for the work that was exhibited at the 1949 Redfern show: 1949 - Jonah (20x24”)…. Rex [ Nan Kivell of the Redfern Gallery] asked for a 2nd picture the same size as Mariner Dances.
This 1949 painting is the best documented version of "Jonah and the Whale", but RE painted another Jonah and the Whale (1950) a year later. We are looking forward to finding that one some day.
