[This is] a supremely direct and arresting image, in which the plangent blue of the sea is tipped up to the picture plane to make a vertical wall. Over this wall a nude bather is swimming/scrambling to meet his naked mate on the beach below. There is nothing else except a narrow strip of hot blue sky and a throbbing sun, yet the poetry of this image is real and unconfined.
