This sketch is of a trawler but its title is recorded as "Warship", one of a set of five collected sketches drawn during RE's time as an official War Artist - four titled "Warship" and one titled "The Docks". The sketch may depict a fishing boat used by the Royal Navy but it looks more like a study for RE's painting "Whitby in Wartime" (1940). The breakwater in the sketch matches the one in the painting. See comparison below. RE inscribed the registration number of the boat in this sketch as WY 71 (a Whitby number) and its name as …
