The bay seems to be seen from a heightened viewpoint in the middle of the sea. However, the wave formation in the foreground looks like that approaching a beach. This picture is panoramic and the horizon low. The band of buildings sandwiched between sea and sky looks very tenuous as if it could be engulfed at any time. There is a sense of weather in this picture…. the little boats fighting the wind.

Richard was a regular visitor to Weymouth, staying with relatives there. So it is not surprising that there are a few of his paintings titled 'Weymouth Bay'.
