The title says ‘looking towards’ but doesn’t mention actually seeing the Needles! I’ve not seen the original painting but the general haziness over the Isle of Wight seems to indicate that where the Needles should be, over to the right, is not visible. The panoramic sweep of Lepe Beach is a wonderful empty space. On the left the spit of gravel that starts to appear as the tide recedes is just apparent and to the right the details of the breakwaters, the little cliff with the trees on top and the fence beyond which the cars park, are all very …
