I think several different pencils were probably used to create the shimmering effect. Dad was the only person I knew who actually used a 4H pencil, though obviously there must be others! It’s a masterpiece of tone-shifting with very few, if any, strongly delineating lines.

The drawing is In the Royal Collection, a Silver Jubilee gift from the Royal Academy of Arts in September 1977.
